Asbestos Disposal in Newcastle

In the City of Newcastle, asbestos waste goes to the council's own Summerhill Waste Management Centre on Minmi Road in Wallsend, which the council says is licensed to receive it. It is never allowed in a kerbside bin, or in an uncovered or unapproved skip bin.

What asbestos disposal in Newcastle actually involves

Summerhill takes asbestos only by booking on 02 4974 2000. Its A-Z guide says at least 24 hours ahead; its asbestos fact sheet says before 3.30pm on the last weekday before delivery. Loads are received from 7.30am to 12 midday on the booked day, never weekends or public holidays. If rain falls the day or night before your delivery, phone Summerhill first to check the site can still take it.

What it costs

Summerhill's 2026/27 charge for asbestos, including asbestos-contaminated soil, is A$584 a tonne with an A$82 minimum, including GST. A load mixed with other waste is charged entirely at the asbestos rate. A Newcastle resident can use a council bulk waste self-haul voucher to take up to 100 kg of asbestos to Summerhill at no charge; normal charges apply above that, no other bulk waste may come with it, and vouchers cover residential waste only. Summerhill's fees run 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, so re-read them in July 2027.

Packing it for the trip

Friable asbestos: double-bagged in heavy-duty polyethylene at least 0.2 mm thick, at most 25 kg a bag, each bag marked CAUTION ASBESTOS in letters at least 40 mm high. Bonded asbestos: double-wrapped in heavy-duty plastic, taped and labelled, in bundles no longer than 2 m and no higher than 0.5 m. Summerhill will not accept asbestos delivered in skip bins or on tilt trays, and non-compliant packaging gets the whole load rejected. On the road, NSW's waste regulation requires the vehicle to be covered and leak-proof, bonded asbestos securely packaged and friable asbestos in a sealed container; at the tip, you must tell the landfill's occupier the load contains asbestos.

Soil mixed with asbestos

If a demolition has mixed broken asbestos sheets into the soil, Summerhill needs a council Disposal Approval first, which needs a competent person's report classifying the asbestos as bonded or friable, and a Class A licence for the removalist if it is friable. The documents should reach the council at least 10 working days before the disposal date, and no contaminated soil is accepted without an approval already granted.

If you carry more than 100 kg or 10 m² of asbestos waste from your home yourself, you report the load to the EPA on its household asbestos form within 24 hours of delivering it; if a licensed contractor carries it, the contractor reports it instead. You stay responsible for your asbestos waste being disposed of lawfully even when you pay someone to take it away, so get a copy of the disposal receipt. It is illegal to bury asbestos on private land without specific approval. Lake Macquarie: its council says asbestos can be taken to the Awaba Waste Management Facility on Wilton Road in Awaba, but must be pre-booked, that the facility accepts construction materials with fees, and that asbestos and fibro sheets and planks are not accepted in its bulky waste collection. The NSW EPA's list of facilities that accept household asbestos names Awaba too, and says to phone the landfill in advance.
