What asbestos roof and sheet removal in Newcastle actually involves

It is legal for a homeowner to remove less than 10 m² of bonded asbestos themselves, or to have a tradesperson do it. The NSW Government still strongly recommends a licensed removalist, because there is no safe level of exposure. At the instrument, the WHS Regulation 2025 sets an area line for a business's own removal work: over 10 m² needs a licence; 10 m² or less is exempt. That line binds a business that commissions or carries out the work at a workplace, and is not shown to bind a private homeowner removing asbestos from their own home. If you are close to the line, treat the job as licensed work: the government pages say less than 10 m² and more than 10 m², and nothing separate about exactly 10 m².

Roofs, water and wrapping

High-pressure water spray and compressed air must never be used on asbestos. Removal uses a wet spray method, and even then the fibres are only suppressed, so respiratory protection stays essential. A cement roof that needs cleaning is a roof that needs a plan, not a pressure cleaner. The City of Newcastle names fibro sheeting in older garages, bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and external walls, roofs including eaves and gables, and fences and garden edging as the usual places, and says buildings constructed before 1990 may contain asbestos. It also says unlicensed persons cannot remove any amount of friable asbestos, or more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos, as exempt development.
