Asbestos Removal prices in Newcastle
There is no set price for asbestos removal, and this site sets none. The NSW Government names what moves it: the age of the building and how it was built, how much asbestos there is, and whether it is friable. In Newcastle, disposal at the council's own Summerhill Waste Management Centre adds its own published charge.
Asbestos removal costs and rules check
What asbestos removal involves, and so what it costs, turns on the rules below: whether the asbestos is friable, how much there is, what has to be notified and where the waste goes. None of them turns on the price of the job. Each is a regulator's, a council's or the NSW Government's own line, with the page it comes from and the date it was read.

What moves the cost of asbestos removal
Where the asbestos is comes first: a backyard shed may cost less than a kitchen, because work inside the house carries more risk of exposing people. Friable or bonded is second. Friable work needs a Class A licence, a sealed work area, air monitoring and an independent clearance. Disposal is third, because removal cost is tied to it: licensed landfills have special requirements. Knowing first helps too: an inspection before work starts helps plan the cost, and testing a sample at a NATA-accredited laboratory costs between $40 and $140, according to the NSW Government's asbestos site (read 27 September 2026). That is the government's guide, not a quote from any laboratory.
What Summerhill and the council charge
Summerhill's 2026/27 charge for asbestos, including asbestos-contaminated soil, is A$584 a tonne with an A$82 minimum, GST included, for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. The NSW waste levy is inside that charge, not added to it. A resident with a council bulk waste voucher can take up to 100 kg at no charge.
Where demolition needs council approval, the City of Newcastle's 2026/27 fee for a development application is A$153 for an estimated cost of A$5,000 or less, and A$235 plus A$3 for each A$1,000 above A$5,000 up to A$50,000. A complying development certificate for demolition work issued by the council itself costs A$750, including GST. Fees are reviewed each July, so re-read them. Lake Macquarie City Council's pages give no asbestos charge; its Awaba facility says fees apply to construction materials, so ask the council before you drive.
